What is trixbox Voice Over Internet Protocol?

trixbox was originally released under the name Asterisk@Home, and is considered the next generation of open source telephony tools. The name was changed because of a company called Digium who had rights to the Asterisk name. Not to mention the @Home portion was misleading because trixbox is excellent for businesses as well.

The dashboard runs off of an enhanced LAAMP (Linux, Apache, Asterisk, mySQL, PHP) to provide easy to use web-based interfaces for installation, management, and maintenance of an entire IP PBX. It is a collection of softwares that are combined into a single package that is easy to install.

As of August 2010, trixbox 2.8.0.4 includes:

  • Festival Speech Engine
  • Asterisk 1.6.0.26
  • DAHDI 2.3.0.1
  • PBXconfig 5.5
  • CentOS 5.5
  • SugarCRM
  • FreePBX
  • Apache
  • mySQL

Why use trixbox VoIP?

The easiest way to think about it is that Asterisk is the actual PBX software, but trixbox installs the entire operating system along with Asterisk and all the supporting components listed above. The primary advantage offered is the ease of set up and use.

Prior to this release, a master of Linux was required to get Asterisk up and running. This is no longer required and now installation is much simpler. Basic Linux skills will, however, be needed for maintenace and troubleshooting. The FreePBX component provides a web-based interface that even average users can navigate and utilize.
