What is Server Consolidation?

It is a method of achieving efficient usage of server resources in order to reduce the number of either physical servers, or server locations, that you require. The idea is to cut down on server sprawl (a common situation where servers are used inefficiently and end up wasting resources and space), and streamline a company’s network and energy usage.

Ultimately server consolidation can either help you cut down on wasted space and energy, or enable you to avoid paying for extra servers that you do not really need. This is done largely with the help of virtualization & cloud computing.

What is Virtualization?

Server virtualization essentially combines your various computer resources, from all over your network into a cohesive, software-based, virtual network. This means, in basic terms, you cut down on the hardware needs of your network and instead use advanced administrative software methods to create a more efficient network.

Virtualization and its efficient virtual networks will lead to less overall need for physical servers (either by combining smaller servers into one larger one, or by eliminating wasteful server sprawl), thereby leading to server consolidation.

Cloud computing is similar to server virtualization in that it essentially leads to a virtual network as well. Software as a service (SaaS) programs will allow the members of a business or organization to communicate and collaborate effectively online. Other options, like Microsoft Business Productivity Online Services (BPOS), are referred to as “Software plus Services”, meaning they combine traditional software with a strong SaaS internet service aspect (creating the cloud computing network).

Green Computing and Server Consolidation

The purpose, ultimately, is to save your company money and resources. Either with virtualization (an in-office virtual network) or cloud computing (an extra-office virtual network), you are looking at a major energy, space, and hardware saving.
This, besides being efficient, is also green. You can brag to your customers about your green computing or simply be proud of the fact that your business is not wasteful, either of money or environmental resources.
