What is Asterisk Voice Over Internet Protocol?

Asterisk is an open source, complete private branch exchange (PBX) software which offers a high degree of flexibility for VoIP solutions.

This powerful software is capable of running on Windows (emulated), Linux, BSD, and OS X. It goes above and beyond your typical PBX features.

Why use Asterisk VoIP?

It supports VoIP in three main forms of protocol which are SIP, H.323, and IAX. Additionally, it supports several other protocols. Let’s go over the three mainstream protocols.

SIP:
Rather than binary code, SIP utilizes a similar protocol to that of HTTP and SMTP. This characteristic makes for less complex troubleshooting. It can use either TCP or UDP transmission.

Since SIP prefers to show a real IP, there are some complications with network address translation (NAT). This can create situations where only one-way audio or no audio conditions occur at times.

H.323:

This alternative protocol is great because it supports almost everything. It is powerful enough for video conferencing and other demanding functions. It also has the capability of providing data on the quality of service.

Similar to SIP, H.323 struggles with network address translation (NAT) because it shows the real IP. It also can be more difficult to troubleshoot due to its binary nature.

IAX:

A more recent addition to the collection of VoIP protocols, it is the indigenous protocol utilized for Asterisk VoIP. This UDP-based protocol is not widely used, however it does provide more flexibility than either SIP or H.323.

It can be considered the best of both protocols. IAX is relatively easy going when it comes to troubleshooting and it is much better with network address translation (NAT) than either of the previously mentioned protocols.

• Call-Queing
• Caller ID

• It needs no additional hardware for VoIP
• It can interconnect with the cellular network
