What Is Application Virtualization?

It can be considered a less extensive version of desktop virtualization that is better suited for particular circumstances where the virtualizing an entire computer for each user isn’t quite necessary.

Since most companies seeking virtualization are straightaway concerned with a set of specific applications, it sometimes makes sense to simply virtualize the application set that the end users need access to.

In the same fashion that server and desktop virtualization separate an operating system from its hardware, application virtualization separates several components from the operating system:

  • Program Executables
  • Configuration files
  • Dependencies

Every virtualized application runs in the confines of its individual environment which includes executable files, libraries and registry entries. Since the program uses no outside resources, it is possible to run multiple instances of the same program or execute it on a newer operating system than for which it was designed.

What’s The Point?

Let’s say that you run a company with representatives located remotely throughout the country who all use the same tailored software that only can run in Windows 2000. Initially, your company provided computers to every employee with Windows 2000 installed. Now your company has grown to a substantial size, and it makes more sense for each employee to provide their own machine. The problem is that they will have different operating systems like XP or Vista. What will you do?

The best solution is application virtualization. The reason being is that it provides the tremendous advantage of being able to run many different environments as if they were within the same environment. Now each employee can use the same program at the same time on their own individual computers with differing operating systems and it’s cheaper than desktop virtualization.

Other advantages include:

  • Easy software deployment (Installation on central location grants access for all users)
  • Universal application updates (updating the virtual app on central location updates it for all users)
  • Universal rollback (backtrack the virtual app on central location and all users revert)
  • Run multiple versions of the same application simultaneously
  • Costs less than desktop virtualization
  • Simplicity of maintenance
  • Eliminated local system and registry bloat
  • No more application conflict
  • Better portability
